International Women’s Day- 2023

On March 8, 2023, Calgary Immigrants for Immigrants Association (CIIA), in partnership with the UTurn Project, hosted a meaningful celebration of International Women’s Day. This event gathered women from diverse backgrounds to celebrate their achievements, reflect on the progress made toward gender equality, and highlight the ongoing work needed to support and empower women.

The event featured inspiring speeches, engaging discussions, and performances that brought attention to the unique challenges faced by immigrant and racialized women, while also celebrating their resilience and contributions to society. One of the key highlights of the day was the presence of former Minister of Multiculturalism and Immigration, Leela Aheer, who joined as a special guest. Her presence and support were deeply appreciated, as she has been a strong advocate for immigrant communities and women’s rights throughout her career.

The celebration provided a valuable platform for women to connect, share their experiences, and discuss the importance of continuing to push for equal opportunities in all areas of life. It was a day of reflection, solidarity, and empowerment, reinforcing the shared commitment to creating an inclusive society where women, especially newcomers, are given the tools, resources, and support they need to succeed.

The collaboration between CIIA and the UTurn Project exemplified the commitment to advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment. The event continues to serve as a reminder of the power of unity and the importance of supporting immigrant and marginalized women in achieving their fullest potential.
