First English classes
The Settlement, Integration, and Language Program (SILP) has truly been a game-changer for the Afghan community, running from May 2023 to May 2024. Through a combination of 84 in-person and online classes, this initiative reached over 300 Afghan newcomers, providing them with the essential English language skills they need to succeed in their new lives in Canada.
These classes were designed to address the day-to-day challenges that newcomers face. Topics such as understanding the Canadian transportation system, grocery shopping, making doctor’s appointments, and navigating online shopping were covered in depth. The practical, hands-on approach allowed participants to learn how to use English in real-life scenarios, making the learning experience relevant and immediately applicable.
One of the core goals of the SILP was to help break down language barriers and bridge the gap between Afghan newcomers and the local community. The program not only taught participants basic language skills but also introduced them to cultural norms, empowering them to feel more confident and integrated in Canadian society. Whether it was understanding how to use public transit, finding resources in the community, or simply communicating effectively in daily interactions, the SILP created a solid foundation for the Afghan community to thrive.
The success of this program is a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives, highlighting the importance of offering tailored support to newcomers. With this strong foundation, Afghan families are now better equipped to access services, build relationships, and embrace the opportunities that Canada offers. The SILP has truly been an invaluable resource, creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for Afghan immigrants and setting them on a path towards successful integration.
